In de jaren '70 zorgde het magazine National Lampoon, opgericht door Douglas Kenney en Henry Beard, voor een frisse kijk op humor. Het blad daagde de gevestigde orde uit en al snel volgde succes op het witte doek. Hieruit ontstonden meerdere films, waaronder de komische klassieker Animal House met John Belushi.
