In 1989, voor de val van Ceauşescu in Boekarest, wordt Eva naar een hervormingsinstituut gestuurd nadat ze min of meer gedwongen de verantwoordelijkheid op zich neemt voor het per ongeluk breken van een borstbeeld van Ceauşescu door een vriend. Op het instituut ontmoet ze Andrei, een protestantse zoon, die haar voor een keuze stelt: samen met hem vluchten of kiezen voor haar familie.
