Niccolo Vivaldi is cellist in de Arena di Verona Orchestra, maar niet als eerste of tweede cello. Dit frustreert hem enorm, want niemand kent zijn naam of herkent zijn gezicht. Zijn vrouw Costanza is mooi en succesvol. Uit wanhoop schrijft Niccolo een komische opera, "Il Merlo Maschio", maar ontdekt tot zijn schrik dat hij een bestaande opera heeft herschreven.
