Film over 2 onderwijzeressen in de jaren 20 van de vorige eeuw op het platteland, die dromen van het leven in de grote stad. Op een dag verschijnt een aantal artiesten en acrobaten, die hen inwijden in de proletarische kunst. Samen met 'de sterkste man van de Balkan' voeren zij een circusact op om de nieuwe avant-garde theaterkunst onder de arbeiders te verspreiden. Liefde en jaloezie gooien echter roet in het eten en de groep valt uit elkaar: de sleur van het komende schooljaar dient zich aan.

In deze film grijpt Karanovic terug op het aloude bijgeloof dat gezinnen zonder zonen verdoemd zijn. Als er steeds maar meisjes kwamen, was het niet ongewoon om een meisje tot jongen te verklaren. Daartoe wordt het meisje geknipt als een jongen en moet het zwaar werk doen. Alles gaat goed tot de menarche, zij haar borsten nauwelijks meer ingesnoerd krijgt en tot overmaat van ramp verliefd wordt op een jongen ...
