In de depressiejaren heeft Edna Spalding moeite om rond te komen nadat haar man, de sheriff, wordt doodgeschoten. Met de hulp van de rondzwervende zwarte Mozes, plant ze katoen om geld te verdienen voor de huur. Zo kan haar gezin bij elkaar blijven.
